In 2013 Global Livingston Institute completed work on Entusi, a resort that would serve as a community hub for community development, leadership, research, and the formation of new partnerships. The authors of this paper worked closely with Global Livingston Institute to complete the research described in this paper.

When interviews facilitated by past Capstone teams illuminated former child soldiers’ need and want for a capacity-building initiative centered on enhancing their agricultural proficiency, GLI launched the Sustainable Farming Collaborative/Model Farm initiative in Spring 2018 with a cohort of 60 villagers.

In Spring 2017, the Cornell Institute of Public Affairs (CIPA) capstone team—Quynh Tong, Yang Li, Rafia Farooqul, and Jazlin Gomez, worked with and provided pro bono consulting services for the Global Livingston Institute (GLI), a non-governmental organization in Uganda dedicated to cultivating global understanding of poverty and fostering healthier communities.

In the fall semester of 2017-2018 academic year, two student consultants from Cornell Institute for Public Affairs - Enknhzul Altangerel and Carolina Araya Chaves - worked on viability study of bakery business in Lira, Uganda, as part of an ongoing research project on reintegration of Former Child Soldiers (FCS) in Uganda.

New Faces New Voices, an advocacy group that focuses on getting women involved in the financial sector in Africa summed up some of the effects of social impact investing on women specifically. The report stated that “women-owned businesses in Africa are growing at a faster rate than women-owned businesses worldwide.”

Reports show that in order for neighborhoods to thrive well, there is a need to reduce the gap of education between the lower social-economic status students and the higher economic status students.

Establish Entusi as a model microgrid facility & training location.

Our goal was to develop a report on current socioeconomic conditions in Uganda as well as existing programs designed to improve mental health, provide vocational training, and increase opportunities for participation and increase earning potential in the agricultural sector to improve the lives of Former Child Soldiers (FCS) in Lira, Uganda.

Managing menstrual hygiene in low-income countries is difficult due to lack of access to feminine hygiene products and few adequate sanitary facilities. Studies in Uganda have found that many girls struggle to attend and do well in school due to inadequate resources to manage their periods.

The purpose of this project was to interact with community members in East Africa to discern problems facing the community and how the Global Livingston Institute and other organizations can be of assistance. In order to meet the needs of a community, it is crucial to determine what those needs look like.

As recent graduates of Environmental Studies programs at the University of Colorado and Portland State University our interest in pursuing this work-study opportunity through the Global Livingston Institute (GLI) lay primarily 1n the areas of land conservation, wildlife preservation and innovative management strategies.
